Despite its size, Vermont produces big new names in the writing world. During today’s hour of Vermont Edition, we hear from three authors making waves in our region. Wyn Cooper, of Hallifax, tells us about his sixth poetry collection, The Unravelling. It focuses on the the things in life that begin to fray with age, like relationships, faith, and even worldviews.
Plus, we hear from Miciah Bay Gault. She has directed the Vermont Book Awards, and has a new novel called The Nobody Code, released earlier this month. It follows 30-something Dinah, who by all accounts has the perfect life: a great husband, a healthy new baby, and her dream job at a local zoo. But, she feels unsettled and stuck, and that restlessness grows when events from Dinah’s teenage years in Vermont come back to haunt her.
Then; The Booker Prize is one of the highest commendations you can receive as a novelist. Out of thousands of books that get published every year, only 13 books are selected as winners. Makenna Goodman of Montpelier is one of those 13. We revisit our conversation from December where we discussed her book, Helen of Nowhere. It’s a story about a disgraced professor, contemplating a move to the countryside. But, it’s also a philosophical work that functions as a modern fairytale, with tight, pithy writing.
